Subject: Application for UX Designer – Daniel Okafor, Bristol

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the UX Designer role at Harbourline Software. I enjoy turning messy, unclear user problems into simple flows, and I was drawn to your focus on tools that help small teams manage their work without heavy training.

In my recent role, I analysed funnel data and session recordings to find where users dropped out of an onboarding flow, then prototyped and tested revised screens in Figma. I also documented user flows and screen specifications so developers could build the designs accurately.

Your posting mentions research, design systems and accessibility. I run usability tests, organise findings into affinity maps and share insights with product teams. I also design to WCAG guidelines and have helped extend a component library, so interfaces stay consistent as products grow.

I would welcome the chance to discuss how my approach could support your product team. I can share a portfolio with case studies on request or at a time that suits you. Thank you for considering my application.

Kind regards, Daniel Okafor

This letter is fictional and written for illustration. Replace every name, company, date and number with your own facts.

  • Name one specific user problem you solved and the method you used, such as usability testing or funnel analysis, rather than listing tools alone.
  • Link to a portfolio case study and say in one line what the reader will see there, so the letter and the work support each other.
  • Show collaboration with developers and product managers, for example through specifications, workshops or shared roadmaps.
  • Mention accessibility and design systems only if you have real experience, and keep the claim modest and concrete.
  • Use numbers only when you can verify them, and describe outcomes honestly, including what you learned from tests that did not go as planned.
Should a UX designer cover letter include a portfolio link?

Yes, include a link and mention it briefly in the letter or the closing. Point to one or two relevant case studies rather than a general site, so the reader knows where to start.

How technical should a UX cover letter be?

Keep it readable for non-designers. Name methods and tools where they matter, such as usability testing or Figma, but focus on the problem you addressed and what changed for users.

What if I have little professional UX experience?

Draw on projects, internships, volunteer work or course briefs, and describe your process honestly: the research you did, the decisions you made and what you learned. A cover letter cannot guarantee an interview, but clear evidence helps.
