Subject: Application for General Practitioner position – Alex Morgan, Manchester

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to apply for the General Practitioner position at Northfield Family Practice. I am drawn to your emphasis on continuity of care for families, which matches how I like to work: knowing patients over time and following problems through to resolution.

In my recent role I diagnosed and treated undifferentiated presentations, using clinical guidelines and clear safety-netting advice to help avoid unnecessary admissions. I also began writing referral letters with concise clinical summaries, which reduced the number of requests for further information from specialist services.

Your practice serves a mixed population, so my experience in antenatal, postnatal and child health checks, safeguarding concerns and mental health assessments should be relevant. I have carried out brief interventions and onward referrals, and I assisted with minor procedures under senior supervision.

Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the chance to discuss how I could contribute to your team and to hear more about your patient population. I can share my CV, references and registration details on request, and I am available for a conversation at your convenience.

Kind regards, Alex Morgan

This letter is fictional and written for illustration. Replace every name, company, date and number with your own facts.

  • Name the practice's patient population or service model and say briefly why it appeals to you, so the letter does not read as a generic template.
  • Use one or two concrete clinical examples, such as referral quality or safeguarding follow-up, and describe your role accurately, including supervision levels.
  • Never include patient-identifiable details; describe cases in general terms and focus on your reasoning and actions.
  • Link your skills, such as chronic disease management, minor surgery or cervical screening, to services the practice actually offers.
  • Keep the tone professional and warm, mention registration and availability, and keep to one page so detail sits in your CV.
Should a GP cover letter repeat my CV?

No. Use the letter to explain why you want this practice and to highlight two or three relevant strengths. Leave the full list of posts, qualifications and dates to your CV.

How much clinical detail should I include?

Enough to show judgement and impact, such as how you approach safety-netting or referrals. Keep cases anonymous and avoid anything that could identify a patient or colleague.

Can I mention interests like audit or teaching?

Yes, if you have real experience and it fits the practice's needs. Describe what you did and what changed, and avoid overstating your role. A letter cannot guarantee an interview, but it helps show fit.
